Additions to the Altar

These additions may be made to an altar.

  1. Reredos, a retable, or a dossal

    1. Reredos—A carved or otherwise ornamented screen of wood or stone at the back of the altar. Or a painting or a combination of the two.

    2. Retable—Also a reredos; the word is often used for a gradine, especially one forming part of a reredos.

    3. Dossal—A curtain hung at the back of an altar by way of reredos or adornment.

  2. Gradines—Steps or shelves behind the altar for candles, flowers, the Altar Cross, etc.
